The extruder screw and barrel form the heart of any plastic extrusion machine. They are responsible for melting, mixing, pressurizing, and conveying materials before shaping them through a die. Their design, material, hardness, and precision directly determine output capacity, melt quality, energy efficiency, and service life.

In this guide, Zhoushan Juyuan Plastic Machinery Co., Ltd. explains what an extruder screw and barrel are, how they work, and how to select the right design for HDPE, LDPE, PP, PVC, PET, WPC, and high CaCO₃ filler applications.

1. What Is an Extruder Screw?

The screw is a rotating metal shaft with helical flights.
Its job is to:

  • Convey raw materials
  • Compress and melt the plastic
  • Mix and homogenize the melt
  • Build pressure before the die

A screw is divided into three typical zones:

1) Feed Zone

  • Deep channel
  • Receives material from the hopper
  • No major melting yet

2) Compression Zone

  • Channel depth decreases
  • Material begins melting
  • Pressure and shear increase

3) Metering Zone

  • Final melting
  • Stable output
  • Homogenized melt for extrusion

Advanced Screw Designs

  • Barrier screw → faster melting, higher output
  • Maddock / Spiral mixing head → better color & filler distribution
  • Vent screw → moisture removal for recycled materials
  • High-speed screw → stable running at 200–250 RPM

2. What Is an Extruder Barrel?

The barrel is a hardened cylindrical housing that holds and guides the screw.

Functions

  • Provides controlled heating
  • Supports pressure build-up
  • Maintains wear resistance
  • Allows venting, feeding, or side feeding

Barrels may include:

  • Feeding section
  • Heating zones
  • Venting ports
  • Bimetallic alloy liners

3. Materials Used for Screw & Barrel

To achieve long life and stable performance, proper material selection is critical.

Screw Materials

  • 38CrMoAlA (nitrided steel)
  • SKD61 / H13
  • DC53 wear-resistant steel
  • GH4169 (Inconel alloy) for high-speed screws
  • Carbide alloy hard-facing

Barrel Materials

  • 38CrMoAlA nitrided barrel
  • Bimetallic barrel (HCR alloy)
  • Nickel-based alloy liner

Why Choose a Bimetallic Barrel?

  • Extreme wear resistance
  • Strong corrosion resistance
  • Suitable for:
    • High CaCO₃ (40–80%)
    • Recycled materials
    • Glass fiber (GF)
    • Flame-retardant additives

4. How the Extruder Screw & Barrel Work

Step 1: Feeding

Material enters through the hopper into the feed zone.

Step 2: Conveying + Melting

Screw rotation + external heaters melt the plastic gradually.

Step 3: Mixing

Additives, colors, and fillers are evenly dispersed.

Step 4: Pressurizing

The metering zone builds final pressure for the die.

Step 5: Extrusion

Molten plastic passes through the die to form pipes, profiles, films, sheets, or pellets.

5. Screw & Barrel Configuration for Different Materials

HDPE / LDPE

  • Barrier screw
  • High mixing capability
  • Bimetallic barrel recommended

PP / ABS

  • Medium shear design
  • Stable temperature control

PVC

  • Uses twin-screw (conical or parallel)
  • Strong temperature stability

High CaCO₃ (40–80%)

  • Strong wear on screw and barrel
  • Use HCR bimetallic barrel + wear-resistant screw

Recycled PE / PP

  • Double vacuum venting
  • Strong mixing section
