Extruder screw barrel wear is a common reason for declining extrusion performance after years of production.

Typical signs include lower output, unstable melt pressure, poor plasticizing, higher energy consumption and inconsistent product quality. Excessive clearance between the screw flight and barrel allows material to flow backward, reducing conveying efficiency.

For abrasive materials such as glass fiber or high CaCO3 compounds, extruder screw barrel wear can develop faster. Bimetallic or wear-resistant solutions may provide longer service life.
